The reason for asking is that this week I suddenly could not post a comment to MY OWN BLOG courtesy of Blogger.
I could moderate the comments of others and I could access the dashboard and publish posts - but I couldn't leave a comment.
The problem was resolved in part by stopping my comments page from being "embedded". In other formats my Google account was recognised and I could leave comments. When it was embedded the account was not recognised.
Embedded format
No recognition of Google account or Open ID with comments page in "embedded mode" hence unable to leave comments |
Full page format
Comment page in full page format Google account is again recognised and I can leave a comment on my blog |
More problems leaving comments!
Now I've begun to realise that embedded comment pages on other blogs are also inaccessible - and I can't leave comments on those blogs either!
I'm now wondering how many people have got a similar problem - or whether this is a one-off
So over to you - I have two questions:
- Do you have an embedded comments page for your Blogger blog?
- Have you had any problems leaving comments on your own blog?
[NOTE: If you want to check out what setting you have:
- go to Settings › Posts and comments
- Under Comments check out the location of your comments function. There are four options:
- embedded (causes a problem for me and others using Apple)
- full page
- pop-up window
- hide
This comments function is set to "full page"]
I find the only time I cant leave comments on blogs is when people have the captcha on. Sometimes these are way to hard to read and are time consuming too! Hopefully this one goes through ;)
ReplyDeleteLet' see if this comments works....
ReplyDeleteThat works fine Sophie. However I couldn't leave a comment on your blog as you have the "embedded format" for comments
ReplyDelete@Kyla - I have the same problems with those captha forms
ReplyDeleteI just sit there pressing one key until it generates one I can read! You don't have to give up on the first one - just make it try another one!
I have not had a problem posting comments on other blogs, however others have mentioned in the past that they were not able to post a comment on my blog.
ReplyDelete@Roger - maybe check the setting on your blog. I've now included a checklist of how to do this at the end of the blog post.
ReplyDeletei've found that being continuously signed in to blogger causes problems, so i don't check the 'keep me signed in' box. the embedded comments was a problem a few months ago, so i changed my own comments to a pop-up box - though it hasn't been an issue recently.
ReplyDeleteI have a problem leaving comments on any blogger blog. I keeps wanting me to use my old blogger info which I do not use any more and will not switch to any form of contact that I do use. Some people have the option of name/email or url but most do not and I just skip leaving comments much of the time
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDelete@ Peggy Have you tried clearing your cache and/or getting a new Google account?
ReplyDeleteI have always used pop up windows and not had a problem, but I will monitor. Overall I notice Blogger have a habit of making small changes but don't put a lot of effort into publicizing and I have learned more about Blogger from other users like yourself.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the instructions.I have switched to full page format and hope that it will solve any problems that others may have had when trying to post comments on my blog.No harm in trying.
ReplyDeleteI have left comments in my own blogs as both visitor and owner, only problem was deciphering the "are you a robot" code. Now I am trying to use yours as a visitor.
ReplyDeleteI have not had any problems and have the same settings as you, 'embedded below post' checked.
ReplyDeleteI also work on a Mac using the Safari browser.
Have you tried Google Help Forums?

@David - Yes, I've been searching via the Google Blogger Group and online and have picked up some references to others having problems - but I'm guessing maybe some people don't realise.
ReplyDeleteMy problem is obviously related to Chrome as it works in Firefox
I suddenly recently could not leave a comment on my own blog and also I can't see the "edit" function under the blog entry as I used to. It's as if it won't see me as logged in, even though I can post a new entry and do everything else.
ReplyDeleteI will try to dis-embed comments and see what happens. Thank you so much for trying to be helpful to others.
you might want to look at this. Hope it help:

Yes, when google defaulted the comment form from the original popup to embedded (about a year ago) I could no longer leave comments on blogs using the new embedded form. Still waiting for the engineers at google to fix this.
ReplyDeleteThis is a slightly different topic, but I don't know how to look for an answer. I can no longer find out how to view my blog such that the little edit pencil icon is at the bottom and the little edit wrench icon is under each of the side boxes, so I can directly get to edit from there. Is this feature gone? TIA
ReplyDeleteI've got the exact same problem. To date I haven't found a solution and it would appear that Blogger is in another one of its ostrich phases where it ignores all feedback it gets about problems
ReplyDeleteI sent tweets direct to Blogger spelling it out - but absolutely no acknowledge or improvement in the situation.
I think maybe they're too busy sitting on their hands?
I just started having this problem the other day. I do not use embedded comments on my blog so it's not a problem there, but I but cannot leave them on blogs with embedded comments. I've noted I'm not even signed into google on these blogs and it erases the comment when I do. After about 3 tries clicking preview first, it will eventually acknowledge the comment. I'm told these comments are emailed to the blog owners, but never show up on their blogs.
ReplyDeleteLeigh - that's exactly the problem I'm having. I've now lost count of the number of comments I've drafted which have been whisked away and disappeared when I pressed the button to publish
ReplyDeleteI've not yet managed to get one to publish - I'm puzzled as to exactly what it is you'e doing which gets them to publish.
Hi there - commenting just because I came across your post whilst googling around Blogger comment problems. I have a wordpress account, and I frequently have problems leaving comments on Blogger blogs. I thought it was a problem between the two account types, but it seems not. It drives me insane - today, whilst trying to leave a comment on a blog I read regularly, and have commented on occasionally, I ended up going round and round in circles with Blogger telling me to prove that I wasn't a robot. I gave up. Good luck, hope you can fix your problem.
ReplyDeleteIt's probably nothing to do with Wordpress - although you should use an OpenID to get round most of your problems
ReplyDeleteI'm on Blogger and even I take 5-6 goes sometimes before I can read the code to prove I'm human. I just bang in anything until I can get one I can actually read!
I'm on my Apple MacBook Pro laptop leaving this message. I have had problems leaving comments on Blogger blogs via my iPhone for over a month now. I type in my comment, google account box is checked and I hit publish. My comment disappears completely. I use to get a pop up box to log in to gmail but that doesn't happen anymore either. I tried logging into gmail and then adding a comment - no luck. I tried changing the settings on my iPhone to always allow cookies - no luck. Then I found your blog. I checked my settings on my Blogger blog and discovered comments and posts were set to "embedded". Once I changed my settings from "embedded" to "full page" for comments and posts I tested leaving a comment on my blog via my iPhone. It worked - and I noticed after I typed in my comments, linked to my google account, it popped up the log in page for gmail and once I logged in my comment published. Thank you so much for posting about this. There are probably many Bloggers who have their comments set "embedded" and don't realize comments aren't coming through. I'm going to post about this at least for my readers. Maybe I can get some Bloggers to change their settings. I use my iPhone even more now than my laptop to leave comments just because of the ease and when we travel. Thanks again for a solution!
ReplyDeleteSandy - You'll be interested to know that my comments are now embedded again - and you were able to see it and leave a comment!
DeleteYes, having same issue, but only opted for "embedded" because I read that was the only way to have access to the "reply" function under each comment. Otherwise we go back to the old system, where we can't reply to a direct comemment....
ReplyDeleteEnable 3rd party cookies in your browser settings and it will work.
ReplyDeleteThis fixed it!
DeleteI have the same prob!
ReplyDeleteHopefully this gets posted!
Can I comment here? I hope so. I found this post while googling why I can't comment on blogspot blogs. Been driving me nuts.
ReplyDeleteFound this because I was losing my mind from losing so many comments (using an iPhone). Saw John's post above about cookies. Let's see if this works!
ReplyDeleteHope the cookie thing fix this
ReplyDeleteHi there. I'm quite new at blogging, so still trying to find my way around. Anyway lots of my readers have said they can't comment in my Blogger blog too. Only the ones in my google circles seem to be allowed. I have now changed from embedded to full page and I hope this solves the problem as it's very disheartening when no one comments on what you have written! Maybe my blog is just too darn boring, who knows!
ReplyDeleteDoes this really work or there's still some setting I missed? Let me try make a comment for comparison in iPhone.
ReplyDeletethx for the help.... i was starting to loose my mind! will check my settings asap!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your helpful article.
ReplyDeleteTesting testing !!!!
ReplyDeleteNot an artist but had fun reading thru posts. Thanks for the helpful posts here too.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this interesting post.
ReplyDeleteEnabling third party cookies in your browser worked a treat.
ReplyDeleteYou're a genius John.
This Blogger comment issue has been annoying me for 3 years.... so have now turned on 3rd party cookies as John suggests and testing here to see if that works. If it does Hurrah! and thank you for this post :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for helping me to solve this painful problem. Fortunately, I have just started using blogger, so have set my comments box as "pop-up" which has improved the commenting ability on ipad and safari. Another annoyance is that you can no longer turn off CAPTCHA for anonymous commenters. However, if you moderate comments CAPTCHA is automatically turned off...
ReplyDeleteI found yesterday that I couldn't post a reply to a comment on my site and and low and behold it was exactly the problem you are describing here. Thank you for posting this!
ReplyDeleteWhat a pain in the .... I wondered why I couldn't reply to a post on my own damn blog!
ReplyDeleteThanks... But why doesn't Google fix this elementary problem before we all migrate to wordpress?
I'm trying this now, as I cannot leave any comments either :-( Hope it works, I really hate retyping LOL. Thanks :-)
ReplyDeleteI can't post comments on other peoples blogger blogs. Let me see what happens here.
ReplyDeleteJen - I'm wondering whether you realise that those of us who moderate comments don't always moderate instantaneously. It might take a while....
ReplyDeleteI visit every day some web sites and information sites to read articles or reviews, but this webpage presents quality based articles.
ReplyDeleteCOMMENTS ON THIS BLOG POST HAVE BEEN SWITCHED OFF DUE TO ABUSE BY SPAMMERS
