RBA Rome Scholarship Prizewinners
On Tuesday night, at the Private View for the Exhibition, the names of the three artists who have been shortlisted for the Rome Scholarship were announced.
This is the process used to progress applications to an awards ceremony and the award of the Rome Scholarship.
- The three artists listed below will be invited to interviews at the Mall Galleries.
- They are encouraged to bring sketchbooks, photos or works which will demonstrate their work and the processes they use.
- The Education Panel will spend about half an hour with each of the artists, talking with them not just about their work, but also what they feel they would gain from the Rome Scholarship.
All three will also be invited to show a work in the next Annual RBA Exhibition in 2025.
The Three Prizewinners
Each prizewinner has won £1,000 and the opportunity to be the eventual winner of the Rome Scholarship.
Catherine Chambers
Her work is inspired by the environment around her, interpreting the nature of our being, our connection with our ancestry and our attitudes to others familiar and unfamiliar. She embraces subjects that are common to people the world over including self-awareness, identity, aspiration, family ties, social status, security and faith.
"Can't See The Wood For The Trees" by Catherine Chambers Oil on Canvas, 152 x 122cm £8,000 |

Joshua Donkor
"Isabelle, Year of the Return" by Joshua Donker Oil, graphite and image transfers on board 80 x 60cm £3,000 |
Joshua is a Ghanian-British Painter born in the UK in 1997. Achievements to date include:
- graduated during Covid with a BA from Cardiff Metropolitan School of Arts and Design, Wales, UK.
- following an Erasmus Exchange at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia
- elected a member of the independent art collective called Contemporary British Portrait Painters. (I'm going to their exhibition in Brixton in June 2024)
- being a shortlised finalist of RBA Rising Stars in 2023 AND 2024
- He also got a nice mention from me in my review of the RBA Annual Exhibition 2024 (in which I also highlighted a painting by Aelfred Hillman last year's winner)
(he) uses portraiture as a tool to subvert monolithic portrayals of Black identity.I was introduced to Joshua and I found him to be a very nice chap who talks intelligently about his art. I love the way in which he's lit the face unevenly and tackled the background of his portrait of Isabelle as backgrounds so often look like an afterthought.

Louis Pohl Koseda
Louis is an artist who has won numerous awards and shown his work in many exhibitions.
He has a Polish heritage, grew up in East London and was raised as a Hare Krishna. A community based focus in his early life has given him a unique perspective on making a difference while making art.
He studied architecture at the Sheffield School of Architecture and has also been very committed to social/community projects and founded the Foodhall Project Sheffield (2015) and the National Food Service (2018) where he also worked as a Director.
His artwork explores the wider social systems in which we live including urban spaces, people and behaviour. At the same time he is grounded in the philosophies, materials and techniques of artists from the past and we had a really interesting conversation last night about the influence of William Blake on his work. He draws freehand having mapped out some of the structure of his drawing in dots (techniques I also use - so I had an instant affinity with him!) We also compared favourite drawing pens and I let him try mine out! I also learned how Blake created tonal changes using ink - and a thumb - in his drawings.
Louis is what I would call "an absolute genuine original" although some of what he does reminds me a lot of Grayson Perry in terms of imperatives, philosophy and social enquiry. I'd also venture to suggest he's going to be producing innovative and ground-breaking artwork into the future and will continue to attract awards, exhibitions and collectors. If he ends up as an RA, it wouldn't surprise me.

He uses figurative compositions, fine line drawing, contemporary portraiture, mnemonic cityscapes and social phenomena to hold a mirror up to society.
My practice weaves between spatial interventions (see earlier work), social theory and visual artwork.
Past awards and achievements include:
- featured in La Venice Biennale's British Pavilion (2020).
- won the prestigious £15,000 prize (2023) sponsored by Christies and organised by the Royal Drawing School and exhibited at Christies
- he has work in various collections, including
- the Royal Collection(2023),
- Manuella Wirth (of Hauser & Wirth),
- George Clarke (Channel 4/Architect)
- while working as an architect he won
- an RIBA MacEwan Award for Architecture for Social Good (2017),
- a Civic Trust's People's Choice Award(2015),
- Civic trust best small projects award(2015),
- a World Architecture Festival award (high commendation) in the category of ‘rethink and renew’ (2012)
- He has also created pavilions and international exhibitions in several countries.
