Introducing 'A Postcard from my Walk'

I'm happy to announce that I'm participating in a new sketching project - which involves mailing sketches around the world - called A Postcard from my Walk.

Postcard from my Walk Logo by Cathy Gatland
You can read all about it on the new blog - which was published today - and which you can find at http://walk-postcard.blogspot.com/.

The project has grown out of the Sketchercise group which I founded.
Sketchercise is a group of people who enjoy sketching from life (no photos!), have already developed the sketching habit AND have found ways of getting out and about and exercising with a sketchbook.
The idea of this new project is that once a month we will mail a sketch done on one of our walks to one of the group of Sketchercise members who are participating in the project.  That way we get to see the real sketch rather than just the image on the Internet!

Fellow participants are:

The first postcards get mailed out next week and should start appearing on the blog in February when they arrive at their destination.

I hope you enjoy following along - links to how to subscribe to this new blog can be found in the side column.

I'd personally like to thank
  • Ronell van Wyk who has been the guiding light and driving force around this new project - she's very organised! ;) - and
  • Cathy Gatland who contributed our new logo which you can see above

PS  Re Out to Lunch,  I got a new microwave on Monday, ordered a new cooker this morning and it's arriving on Friday.  Just got to go and turn the kitchen upside down now to work out where all the bits which I used to keep in or on the cooker are now going to go!  Plus lots more stuff to do around the home so I'll be back next week.

Sketchcrawl is 5! (Plus 25th Worldwide Sketchcrawl tomorrow)

On November 21st 2004, the very first global sketching marathon was held.

Tomorrow, 21st November it is
Here's a thread about 5 YEARS of SKETCHCRAWLING around the WORLD.

What is a sketchcrawl?

This is what Founder Enrico Casarosa has to say about it back in February 2006.
The basic idea: to record nonstop everything I could around me with my pencil and watercolors. A drawn journal filled with details ranging from the all the coffee I drank to the different buses I took. After a whole day of drawing and walking around the city the name seemed quite fitting: "SketchCrawl" - a drawing marathon. The crawl was more tiring than I imagined but also more fun and exciting than I had thought. Giving yourself this kind of mandate for a full day changes the way you look around you. It makes you stop and see things just a tad longer, just a bit deeper … needless to say I loved it.

I soon figured out it was much more interesting to do the marathon with a group of artists instead of all by myself! And so SketchCrawl turned communal. After a whole day of drawing it proved to be amazingly interesting and inspiring to share and compare other people's drawings and thoughts. Different takes on our surroundings, different details, different sensibilities.

The next step was making the SketchCrawl a World Wide event: having people from different corners of the world join in a day of sketching and journaling and then, thanks to the Internet, having everyone share the results on an online forum.

So here it is, we have a website now, a few Crawls behind me, some by myself some with friends and artists from around the world … and hopefully plenty SketchCrawls ahead of us.
Enrico Casarosa - About Sketchcrawl February 2006

There are some who would say it's also another form of Sketchercise!

Where are the Sketchcrawls taking place around the world?

This is a map of all the places participating in the 24th Sketchcrawl in September 2009

In the Sketchcrawl Forum plans are being made and this is a list of the current places planning a sketchcrawl. It's not too late to start planning for another venue.

I've always really fancied travelling with my sketchbook to a different city to do a sketchcrawl! When I look down the list of places participating I want to start looking up planes and trains!

USA
Europe
South America
Asia
Australasia
If you're out there and sketching don't forget to take a photograph of your group and to post it to the forum.

Here in London I can't help thinking that I'm going to be very deterred by the weather. The forecast is for heavy rain and wind for the next couple of days!!! Looks like the plans are to sketch in and around the National Gallery.

However wouldn't it be great if as many people as possible go sketching tomorrow?

All because one chap went on a pub crawl and then wondered what it would be like if he went on a crawl with a sketchbook instead!

The Urban Sketchers Manifesto - final draft

USk founder Gabi Campanario has just posted his final draft manifesto for Urban Sketchers on the blog. His intention is to have a clear statement of purpose of what the main Urban Sketchers blog and the new USk city blogs and the the Flickr group should be about.

I've reproduced it below.
Urban Sketchers Manifesto
  1. We draw on location, indoors or out, capturing what we see from direct observation.
  2. Our drawings tell the story of our surroundings, the places we live and where we travel.
  3. Our drawings are a record of time and place.
  4. We are truthful to the scenes we witness. We don't exaggerate reality or caricaturize people.
  5. We use any kind of media and cherish our individual styles.
  6. We support each other and draw together.
  7. We share our drawings online.
  8. We show the world, one drawing at a time.
I like it.

It seems to me to capture the essence of people who sketch their surroundings:
  • that we do it real time (and not from photos),
  • that we make a record (rather than create a product),
  • that we are all individual with own unqiue perspective and styles (and we don't copy other people) and
  • that we use whatever media works for us (no need to do the same thing as somebody else)
  • that we share our sketches online!
I guess the only bit that doesn't feel quite right is the community bit. That's because urban sketchers has grown so very big so very fast. I'm not sure I feel part of a community in the same way that others do - and I think that has influenced how often I now post on the blog

It's certainly a lesson I learned and have tried to put to good use when creating Sketchercise. In Sketchercise, we've decided that want to start small and only grow slowly. We need enough people to make it work - but the idea was to have a real community group for people who want to exercise and sketch. To my mind fast growth can cause all sorts of issues and problems and slower and more organic growth can work much better in maintaining community participation the long run.

After all - small is beautiful - and I think quite a lot of us would like to be a little bit smaller!

PS Spot a certain well known sketcher from Hertfordshire in the little picture!

Sketchercise - now on Flickr too!

Thanks for applying - Thank you to all the people who applied for membership of Sketchercise yesterday. There are obviously a lot of people who are very interested in the idea.

Thanks for blogging - Thank you also to all the current members of the Sketchercise Ning community who are already writing about Sketchercise on their blogs. :) Here are some examples..........
Sorry! - However it was very sad yesterday to have to turn down about half the people who applied for membership of Sketchercise yesterday. This is because while our Ning community is still very new and getting off the ground we're limiting new members to people who are already active in terms of sketching combined with some form of activity. What that means is that I take a look at your website or blog to find evidence of what you've achieved so far - in terms of combining sketching and exercising.

What's clear is that there are people who like the idea who aren't doing it at present.

The good news - So, in order that people who are interested in Sketchercise can give it a go AND have a place where you can post your work to show us what you've been up to, I've created a second site for those who are very new to sketching and exercising at the same time.
I'm now off to see the Pastel Society Private View this afternoon and also pick up an artwork before the Tube strike kicks in tomorrow!

Sketchercise!

I'd like to introduce you to Sketchercise which is for people who enjoy sketching AND taking exercise to maintain or improve their health outside a gym!
Activity to maintain your health or become healthier doesn't need to be done in a gym. All you need to do to join this group is enjoy sketching, have developed the sketching habit and have found ways of getting out and about - with a sketchbook. You can walk or cycle or paddle your own canoe - so long as it involves activity and sketching!

We review the websites you nominate for evidence of the above before new memberships are approved
The origins of Sketchercise

Back in 2006/7 I was a member of the blogging crowd who cheered on Julie Oakley (One Mile from Home) as she got out and about, taking a one mile walk each day - with a sketchbook to record what she saw.

At the time she was well supported by a small group of like minded sketchers who took their exercise in different ways - such as Alison on her bike in Canberra (Five K Radius) and Penny walking in South Australia (With my boots and sketchbook). I'm sure they kept going because of the mutual support - and that was my main reason for setting up Sketchercise last month.

Initially I was looking for a mutual support group - people who would say "Wow - 5 miles!!!" on a periodic basis and keep me going on my own personal quest to lose weight, get fit and reduce the risks to my mobility.

Since setting it up it's become very clear to me that there are quite a few people who enjoy combining their sketching activities with some form of exercise - whatever that might be - irrespective of whether the initial motivation is about some form of active intervention around health/weight issues.

My personal perspective

My reason for walking more is to try and reduce the weight which has absolutely piled on since I snapped my instep - while walking - and my connective tissue disorder was diagnosed. Since then I've had a number of major falls, torn lots of tissue - which means six weeks on crutches every time I have a bad fall - developed feet and ankles which hurt most of the time, increased stiffness, very poor balance and an inability to stand for more than 10 minutes. Increased weight just makes my feet hurt more and increases the likelihood of yet more falls which are in turn very likely to involve yet more tears.

What I needed to do was get out of the vicious circle and to create a virtuous circle of diet and activity which would help me to reduce my weight. So - at the beginning of this year I resolved to do something about it.

Since 1st January 2009, 'naughty' food, alcohol and all excesses were banned and I started walking. As of the weekly weigh-in last Saturday night I'm now 2lbs short of having lost two stone since New Year's Day. This is despite having another bad fall in February and having to comply with doctors' orders for three weeks leg rest with my leg up all the time in March/April which, as you can imagine, completely stalled the weight loss!

What has helped me has been taking my camera and sketchbook out with me on my outings. The idea was to make exercise seem less like something I needed to do and more like something I wanted to do. Now I really enjoy going out for my walks, am finding more and more places to go and see and revisit. I always sketch every time - but every time I see things I could sketch in future!

Just over two weeks ago I got a pedometer and in the last two weeks I now know that I've walked more than 40 miles!

How Sketchercise may develop

Sketchercise is still very new - but it has a lot of potential to develop in very positive ways. Below I've listed some of the ideas which occurred to me about how Sketchercise might develop when setting it up
  • telling each other about sketching groups or walking groups which we belong to
  • providing details about how to join any like-minded souls on walks with a sketchbook
  • identify places to go which provide good opportunities for walking and sketching
  • identify good walks for sketchers - how many miles, terrain, how to get there etc
  • reporting back on outings we've been on. (That can be a link to a blog post)
  • telling each other about useful kit for sketching and walking. (I've become very attached to my pedometer and new portable sketching stool)
  • recording our steps/distances/calories burned and providing support for those dedicated to losing weight!
It's a small community at present - just 15 women and 1 man - but we are now thinking about growing it in a controlled way. We're quite keen to keep it on the small side so that we don't feel swamped by people we don't know. On the other hand it needs to get to a certain size to create an active community - and we're leaning towards having an active membership in more ways than one.

Each member can invite/sponsor people to join the group and we're also going to let people self-nominate as well - although the process for approving memberships for the latter might take a little time.

So - if you already combine sketching with some form of activity and are interested in joining Sketchercise do let us know. Leave a comment below and provide a link to a site which demonstrates what you've been doing so far.

and finally...... 8 reasons to exercise!

Did you know you burn exactly the same number of calories when you walk a certain distance as when you run the same distance. It just takes a bit longer to get there!

I've adapted Jana Bouc's excellent list of reasons for exercise to highlight why it can be such a good idea.
  1. Exercise strengthens and stretches muscles which helps to prevent pain and being pain free means being able to draw and paint and do other activities for longer!
  2. Exercise improves balance, which prevents injuries
  3. Exercise builds bones
  4. Exercise reduces stress!!!!
  5. Exercise lowers cholesterol
  6. Exercise creates endorphins which make you feel great both during and after exercise
  7. Regular exercise rebuilds the habit of regular exercise
  8. Exercise leads to weight loss and looking better
