The Sunday Times Watercolour Competition 2014 - Call for Entries

The Call for Entries for 27th year of the prestigious Sunday Times Watercolour Competition was published today. Artists are invited to submit up to four works.
The Sunday Times Watercolour Competition provides an opportunity for artists across the UK to redefine, celebrate and reward excellence and originality in watercolour and water-based media.

Who can submit entries

  • The competition is open to all artists currently resident in the UK.
  • There are no age limits for artists wishing to enter. 

What sort of work can be submitted

The judges will be looking for work that makes the most imaginative or otherwise impressive use of a water based medium.

  • The competition is open to all paintings in a water-based medium.
  • The paintings entered should have been:
    • carried out in the last three years and
    • not previously exhibited.
    • PLUS All selected work must be available until the end of January 2015.

  • The maximum size of work, in its largest dimension, including frame, is122 cm
  • Artists may submit up to four works.
  • Copyright: It's vital that artists do not infringe the copyright of any other person. Hence:
    • The work must be the sole and original work of the entrant; it must be their own original composition.
    • The artist must own the copyright of any works entered into the competition.
    • If selected for exhibition, the artist must agree for an image of the work to be used for any publicity or marketing material relevant to the Sunday Times Exhibition.
  • Entries will only be accepted:
    • with fully completed documentation 
    • only on the specified handing-in dates.

How much does it cost?


  • Entry is £15 per work - payable at handing in 
  • A commission of 40% +VAT is deducted from the value of all sales

What can I submit?

Artists can submit up to four works via online entry. Full details can be viewed online at www.parkerharris.co.uk.
  • Use the Online Entry Form to complete all required details and to upload your images
  • Resolution: 300 dpi
  • File size: a maximum file size of 500KB
  • File types accepted: JPG, TIFF, PNG (0.5MB max file size).
  • Each image file must be named with your surname, first name and brief title e.g. SmithJohn_Title.jpeg.

What's the deadline for entries?

  • The closing deadline for online submission is 5pm, Monday 2 June 2014.
The key dates are
  • 2 June - Deadline for online entries, by 5pm
  • 13 June - Results of initial entry emailed to artists by this date
  • 18 June - Shortlisted artists submit works to FBA
  • 20 June - Results of second round judging emailed to artists by this date
  • 24 June - Unaccepted short listed works available for collection at FBA, 10am-5pm
  • 15-20 September - Exhibition at Mall Galleries, The Mall, London SW1 10am-5pm
  • October 2014 – January 2015 - Exhibition tour

Selection process

The 2014 judges are:
  • Sarah Armstrong Jones Artist
  • Desmond Shawe-Taylor CVO Surveyor of the Queen’s Pictures
  • Louis Wise Critic & Writer, The Sunday Times
As is becoming the norm for art competitions these days, the judges will initially review entries through a digital submission process. 

After that, some 250 artists will be shortlisted and invited to deliver their actual works for final judging.  From this shortlist approximately 100 paintings will be selected to hang in the exhibition.

The 2014 Sunday Times Watercolour Exhibition & Tour


Approximately 100 works will be exhibited at the Mall Galleries, London between 15th - 20th September 2014.

The Mall Galleries will also provide a venue for a series of FREE workshops and demonstrations by past and current exhibitors during the exhibition.

The exhibition will then tour around the offices of Smith & Williamson throughout the UK from September 2014 to January 2015.
