The problem for this post this week is I wasn't in London for half of it!
I got back from my short break in the middle of the week. Then when I got back I was doing things - like seeing the annual exhibition of the Society of Botanical Artists or attending a life drawing workshop linked to the Lucian Freud Portraits Exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. I'll be posting some of my drawings from the evening this next week.

Art Blogs - Plein Air Convention
So my references to artists blogs this week will focus on the recent Plein Air Convention which had a lot of bloggers attending.Plein Air Convention
The 1st Annual Plein Air Convention and Expo was held over 4 days between April 12-15th, 2012 at the Red Rock Casino, Resort & Spa just outside Las Vegas in the picturesque Nevada desert. I gather it was a big success. My friend Louise went so I've already heard something about how it went. It wasn't just painting and included Eric Rhoads' Marketing Boot Camp and a trade show for the art suppliers. Here are comments by others who also attended what looks like the first of many.

This has been a great convention. Over the weekend, I ran into a lot of old friends and folks I've met over the years: Anne Laddon, Kim Lordier, Margi Lucena, Anita Louise West, Scott Prior, Brad Holt, Ed Terpening, Jeanne Mackenzie, Paul Kratter, Scott Gellatly...the list goes on, and I apologize if I've omitted anyone!
- Lynn Whipple (Lynn Whipple Plein Air Paintings) had A blast at the Plein Air Convention
- Paula Ann Ford (Tennessee Pastel Artist) has posted a pic of a couple of her pastel paintings in situ and then the paintings themselves in Las Vegas Plein Air #1&2, Soft Pastels on Canson, 9"x12"
- Becky Joy (Becky Joy Fine Art) painted Yuccas at Red Rock, Nevada
- Marina Laliberte (Marina's Painting a Day) from Pembroke Ontario also attended and this is her report back from the Plein Air Convention in Las Vegas 2012
- Brian Mark Taylor was one of the artists who did a demonstration at the Convention
- Karen Margulis came back with a commitment to paint plein air - see Why We Need to Paint en Plein Air) - and to do five oil studies a week which she will be posting to her Miles of Canvas blog

- It seems likely that next year's event will be held the same week - but in Monterey, California.
iPad sketching

Art Exhibitions
Major Museums
- The major exhibition at Tate Britain this autumn will be the first major survey of the Pre-Raphaelites and the biggest show of their work in 30 years. This is the Guardian on the topic of Pre-Raphaelites exhibition celebrates 'revolutionary' art
- The queues for the Hockney exhibition at the RA continued until the very end - see Hockney is bigger than Van Gogh! I went to the last night for my fourth visit and the place was packed.
Regional UK
- For those who enjoy watercolour, there's an exhibition of work by Albert Goodwin RWS (1845-1932) at the Young Gallery, Salisbury until 26 May 2012. You can see an online exhibition of Albert Goodwin's work on the Chris Beetles website. I know Chris is of the opinion that Albert Goodwin is one of the finest watercolour painters the UK has ever produced. Goodwin trained with the pre-Raphaelites, was inspired by Turner and supported by Ruskin.

- Paradises and Landscapes on The Art of the Landscape provides an overview of the exhibition at the Museum Carmen Thyssen in Malaga - runs until October 2012. This Art Daily article also comments on the exhibition Exhibition of paradises and landscapes in the Thyssen Collection opens in Málaga
Major Museums USA
- There's a lot of interest in Ai Weiwei (Chinese, b. Beijing, 1957) in Washington in 2012. “Ai Weiwei: According to What?” will run from Oct. 7 to Feb. 24, 2013, at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington. This is a New York Times article about it. It is preceded by
- “Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads,” a monumental 12-part sculptural suite by Ai Weiwei which is installed around the perimeter of the fountain on the museum’s plaza. The work will be on view from April 19 until Feb. 24, 2013.
- the Smithsonian’s Arthur M. Sackler Gallery will present “Perspectives: Ai Weiwei” from May 12 to April 7, 2013 and
- the Corcoran Gallery of Art will exhibit “Untitled,” from September 22 to January 13, 2013.
- The exhibition “Dürer and Beyond" covers Central European Drawings in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1400–1700 (April 3–September 3, 2012). This is the New York Times article about the exhbition - A Master Opens the Door to an Empire. This link takes you to images of some of the works in the show. One might think this "Small Piece of Turf" possibly prompted the idea of Dürer's Great Piece of Turf but for the fact the latter was painted by Dürer some 80+ years earlier!

- Statcounter announced in March that its stats showed that Chrome was the world's number one browser for a day. Its growth has been phenomenal (unlike Google+) . I personally siwtched because it was much faster.

- Karen Margulis gives an iPad app "Paper" a rave review.

The Princes Foundation for Children and the Arts created a Face Britain art project
This is an interesting article talking about how the project worked
The project has also organised the creation of portraits by celebrities and famous artists which are being auctioned to support work with disadvantaged children acrothe UK. There are to be two auctions and you can see images from the two auctions here.
Face Britain is the UK’s largest ever mass collaborative art project, designed by The Prince’s Foundation for Children & the Arts, to celebrate the nation’s children and young people during the lead up to HM The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.This last week, children's artwork generated by the project has been used to create huge images of the Queen projected onto the facade of Buckingham Palace. Thousands of children's self-portraits were covering Buckingham Palace every night until Saturday. More than 200,000 self-portraits have been crested to provide imagery at every venue around the country.
