The Pastel Society has changed the date of its Annual Exhibition for 2009. This year the Annual Open Exhibition will take place between 10th and 21st June at the Mall Galleries with the Private View being on the 9th June. Their aim is to present a vibrant exhibition of paintings and drawings which reflect the extremely diverse nature of the use of the pastel medium by artists working today. I'm expecting it will also include a tribute to Mark Leach, the President Elect who sadly died in June 2008.

The annual exhibition is open and consequently features works by both members and non members. The annual exhibition of the Pastel Society is always special for me because this was the very first national art society which accepted work from me into their annual exhibition - all the way back in 1995!

"Orange Grove - Chios" was completed in a couple of hours while I sat in the orange grove of a fomer Venetian merchants house on Chios in Greece!

For full details please send a large SAE to Federation of British Artists, 17 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y 5BD.

Prizes: The Pastel Society has a long established tradition of sponsorship for a number of prizes - a number of which are sponsored by galleries who exhibit pastel artists. You can find out more details about these on the Pastel Society website page about the exhibition.

You can see more drawings of trees on my website - Drawings of Trees and Leaves by Katherine Tyrrell. I did fewer sketches back in 1995 - having just graduated to completing pastels on full sized sheets of Rembrandt boards which are 19.5" x 24.5". I remember coming home from Chios with a large suitcase with an awful lot of very large pastels - like this one, this one and this one - clamped between foam core in the bottom! However you can see a little bit more of the island of Chios in my travels with a sketchbook page about Greece

  2. I haven't seen your Orange Grove before, Katherine. Beautiful colour and design and achieved en plein air - Wow! Of course I'm looking at this and thinking - Katherine could make a beautiful reduction linocut after this picture.
