Wish 'Lines and Colours' a Happy 10th Birthday

There are a very few art blogs which I have followed consistently in the last 10 years. One of them is Charley Parker's fantastic 'Lines and Colors'. It's a really class act!

The header for the Lines and Colors art blog - note the quotes!
There are very few people on the Internet who write with enthusiasm and real knowledge about an enormous variety of artists and illustrators past and present.

Charley writes about illustration from the 19th to the 21st centuries and art history generally with authority - and amazing links.  He really knows his stuff.

The only other blogger who comes close to him in terms of the contribution to art education is James Gurney (Gurney Journey) - but James tends to write shorter posts and to have a more practical oriented blog - awesome as it is.  They complement each other very well.

The Lines and Colors archive - accessed via the timeline archives in the left hand column in desk-top view - is truly amazing. Very little of it is time-specific (except when he is writing about exhibitions) so you can delve through the months and years of the last decade and come up with masses of material to inspire and educate.  Or alternatively focus on his categories (also in the left hand column) and learn about Drawing or Pen & Ink or Vision and Optics or Watercolor and Gouache or Webcomics etc.

I know I've found out about masses of artists for the first time on Charley's blog.

This is why he does it
When I was 10 or so, I came across some paperback reprints of the EC Mad comics from the 1950’s. These irreverent, hilarious comics, written by comic genius Harvey Kurtzman and maniacally drawn by Wally Wood, Will Elder and Jack Davis, popped the top off my impressionable little brain, and both my eyes and my world got significantly wider. (Those early Mad comics were outrageous, subversive and outside the mainstream in a way that’s hard to describe now. They were the visual equivalent to early Rock n’ Roll. See my post on Wally Wood.)

It was my first delicious “Wow, there’s a whole other world out there I didn’t know about!” moment (and what made me want to draw comics).

Moments like that have happened again as I’ve been dazzled by the discovery of new artists or genres that have sparked my imagination: mid ’60s Marvel superhero comics, late ’60s underground comics, the classic illustrators and pen-and ink artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries (particularly the Brandywine school), old master drawings, Dada, Surrealism, Impressionist painting, early 1900’s newspaper comics, 19th century academic painting, European comics, Chinese ink painting, Japanese Anime, digital concept art… – every one a revelation and a new world.

It’s my delight in that feeling of wide-eyed discovery that has prompted me to create Lines and Colors in August of 2005.

I’m not a critic. In fact, I may be more of an anti-critic. I’m only writing about things I like. It’s my hope that I can introduce you to some visual art gems that you may not be aware of, or perhaps tell you something you didn’t know about someone or something you’re already familiar with. (And maybe you can do the same for me.)
I hope, if he isn't already, that he's on the curriculum reading list for every illustration course.

I just wish he'd do a post about how he does that with the images! ;)

If you can spare a moment and have ever appreciated his work, can I suggest you leave him a comment today.

Two videos about Ai Wei Wei and upcoming RA exhibition

On 19th September, a major exhibition of work by the leading Chinese contemporary artist Ai Wei Wei opens at the Royal Academy of Art.
  • The exhibition is the first major institutional survey of his artistic output
  • It's been curated in collboration with Ai Wei Wei from his studio in Beijing.
  • It includes
    • significant works from 1993 - when Ai Weiwei returned to China - after more than a decade spent living in New York
    • new site-specific installations and interventions across various spaces within the RA and its courtyard.
Ahead of the opening of the exhibition, The Royal Academy of Art have published two videos on YouTube of an interview with Ai Wei Wei (website) done by Tim Marlow, the new Director of Artistic Programmes at the RA (and formerly of the White Cube).

Ai has made a number of films using handheld video cameras over the past twenty years many of which document significant events such as the changing face of Beijing, the impact on the families of the victims of the Sichuan earthquake of 2008 and the demolition of his Shanghai studio in 2011. The hand carved marble video recorder eternalises the equipment Ai uses to record these events and to question the rights of the individual.
These are those videos. The first one lasts just over 5 minutes and the second one is seven minutes.

In this video, recorded at his home in Beijing, Ai Weiwei talks about his artistic influences and the role of politics in his work. This conversation took place ahead of his major exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in autumn 2015.
Ai Weiwei's monumental work 'Straight' will be the heaviest sculpture ever shown at the Royal Academy when it is installed for the artist's major exhibition in September 2015. The work is made from straightened steel reinforcing bars, salvaged from the ruins of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake.

Ai Wei Wei Exhibition details:

  • Dates: 19 September — 13 December)
  • Days and times: Saturday – Thursday 10am – 6pm, Friday 10am – 10pm
  • Venue: Main Galleries, Burlington House
  • Price: £17.60 (without donation £16). Concessions available. Friends of the RA and under 16s go free.
  • Tickets include a multimedia guide and Friends of the RA will receive one for free.

Urban Sketchers UK - all the events on one page

I've noticed on every London Urban Sketchers sketchcrawl that I've organised that we always seem to get people coming along who are temporarily visiting London.

Plus we also have a large group of people from around the UK (e.g. Oxford, Cambridge, Northampton, Southampton) who regularly come to the sketchcrawls in London

It struck me that maybe other Urban Sketchers groups in the UK and other sketchcrawls run by these groups could also have more visitors if maybe our sketchcrawls got a higher profile and were shared around more.
Example: I'm off to a sketchcrawl at Magdalene College in Cambridge next weekend because I found out about it from somebody who came to our one in London on Sunday!
Especially as all sketchcrawls are FREE and open to all comers!

They are certainly not reserved just for those who belong to a group - and people are welcome to joint the numerous groups around the UK - and we need to get that message out!

So I've decided to run an experiment for the next two-three months.

I've set up a new Facebook Page called Urban Sketchers UK - Events. The aims of the new Page are as follows:

What's on "Urban Sketchers UK - Events"?

On the new Facebook Page you can

In other words it's just a single point of contact for all the listings.

It's not talking over the events created by the host groups. Indeed no event will be included unless it already has a listing on the host group!

The big question is how to keep it up to date. One of the ways I hope to do this is to get input from "Editors" appointed by the different groups who contribute and update the page for their events as and when required.

But you don't have to be able to use Facebook or set up an event in order to get one listed - you just need to leave a comment on the Page and tell me the link on wherever you post information about your group's sketchcrawls and other events.

Please note I only started this last night(!) and don't yet have all current sketchcrawls on the new Facebook Page - but you can see a sample of them for next weekend below.

UK Urban Sketchers Events - this is what is accessible via the events tab.
Click the link to see event details.
Click the link on that event page and go straight to the host group.

Your input

I'd be very interested in people's comments about this initiative - which took off last night when I wanted to see if I could make it work - and how it could maybe be improved.
  • So far we have c.50 people who like the idea. Will you be one of them?
  • What do you think might make it better?

Jeff George wins top prize at CPSA Annual International Exhibition 2015

The 23rd Annual International Exhibition of the Coloured Pencil Society of America is currently on display at Oglethorpe University Museum in Atlanta, Georgia - until 23rd August 2015.

Every year this exhibition comprises artwork drawn using 100% colored pencil and is based in a gallery in a different part of the USA.

I liked the way CPSA announced their prizewinners on the CPSA facebook page - giving each a proper introduction to members.  The prizes were split between"
  • 8 still lifes (50% of the total)
  • 4 human portraits and 2 animal portraits
  • 2 works which are figurative urban landscapes - but with a concept
Below you'll find:
Thanks to Shawn Falchetti CPSA for permission to use his photographs of the exhibition and some of the artists.

The 2016 Exhibition will be in Tacoma, Washington.

The Prizewinners Page on the CPSA website
The prizewinners were announced at the Annual Convention Banquet and are as follows

CPSA Best Of Show And Cippy Award ($5,000)

Jeff George has won the top award of at least two other occasions that I can think of and has been a regular prizewinner for as long as I have been covering this exhibition - which is nearly 10 years!

For the uninitiated, 'What so proudly we hailed' is a line from the Star Spangled Banner, which celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2014 and became the national anthem of the USA in 1931.
Oh say can you see by the dawn's early light,What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming,Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave,O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

CPSA District Chapters Award For Exceptional Achievement ($2,000)

In the Beginning by Arlene Steinberg

The Dixon Ticonderoga Award For Exceptional Merit ($1,000)

Award For Excellence ($400)

Selected Artists

Below is a list of the artwork and artists selected for the exhibition - from all over the USA and countries and continents - organised by the location of the artist.

This provides something of an indication where coloured pencil art and CPSA branches are active within the USA as the numbers being selected do not correlate with the population of those states.
