Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize 2017: Call for Entries

This an overview of the Call for Entries for the 2017 Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize which has a first prize of £15,000 and two prizes for young artists.

This prestigious and well regarded art competition for painting and drawing has two aims:
  • to encourage the very best creative representational painting and 
  • to promote the skill of draughtsmanship

I like this art competition a lot. The selectors typically stay on brief and it attracts some excellent artwork from a wide range of artists - both experienced and emerging

I've also been following it for long enough now to know that it's very often a competition which picks out young artists who become extremely well known and successful in the years that follow (You can see my review posts for this competition in previous years (back to 2008) listed at the end of this post)

All entries are digital in the first instance with works selected for exhibition from a second round of judging of the actual artwork.

The deadline for entries is Monday 19th December 2016 at 5pm (17:00 GMT).

Approximately 100 paintings are selected for exhibition and all works are for sale.
The exhibition will be held at the Mall Galleries opening 6th March 2017 and closing on 18th March 2017. It will be open daily 10am to 5pm with free admission - and always gets a good attendance.

Prizes


The value of total prize pot is £30,000 and is especially attractive for young artists as it includes two specific prizes for artists under 25 and 30 years old and a people's prize

For 2017, the five runner up prizes have been eliminated. Instead there is now a NEW Second Place Prize, a NEW People's Prize and the the value of the Young Artist award has been increased (2016 £2,500 2017: £4,000)

The prizes are:
  • First Prize: £15,000
  • NEW Second Prize: £4,000
  • Young Artist Award: £4,000 (For an artist who is 25 years of age or under)
  • Brian Botting Prize for an outstanding representation of the human figure*: £5,000 (For an artist who is 30 years of age or under)
  • NEW Peoples’ Prize: £2,000

The important dates for this competition are as follows
Entry
  • Monday 19 December 2016 Deadline for online entries, by 5pm (GMT)
First Round of Judging
  • Friday 13 January 2017 - Deadline for artists' receipt of email with results of initial judging (you now have two weeks to get your work framed if not already!)
Second Round of Judging
  • Friday 27 January 2017 Shortlisted artists submit works to FBA 10am-5pm
  • Saturday 28 January 2017 Shortlisted artists submit works to FBA 10am-4pm
  • Tuesday 31 January 2017 Results of final round judging emailed to artists by this date
Collect unaccepted work
  • Friday 3 February 2017 Unaccepted works available for collection at the FBA, 10am-5pm
  • Saturday 4 February 2017 Unaccepted works available for collection at the FBA, 10am-4pm
Exhibition
  • 6 – 19 March 2017 Exhibition at Mall Galleries, The Mall, London SW1

It's unclear whether there will be second exhibition in Guildford as usually occurs in the summer.

Eligibility


Who can enter

  • Living artists over the age of 18, who are resident in the British Isles - irrespective of whether or not they are a British citizen. 
  • British citizens living abroad cannot enter.

Two of the prizes are age-related. Despite this, it's IMPOSSIBLE to tell from the website what the date is for determining age - which is extremely odd to say the least!

Normally in other competitions which do make the date for age clear (eg BP Portrait Award), the date is usually the deadline for entry date.  In the absence of any information, IMO you'd be pretty safe to assume this as the determining date.

Eligible artwork

  • Original - which (although they don't say) means in art competition terms that you can assert copyright for your work. What the law says is that your work is derivative and not eligible to claim copyright if you have copied another original artwork done by somebody else - and that includes photographs.
  • two-dimensional works in any painting or drawing media.
  • MUST have been completed in the last three years 
  • not previously exhibited. (Presumably within the three years which ends with the deadline for entry - again no date is specified)
  • All works must be for sale, except for commissioned portraits (which must be marked NFS on rear).

Number and size of artworks

  • You can submit up to 4 works
  • The longest dimension of each entry - including frame - must not exceed 60 inches (152 cms).

How to enter


This is a link to the Rules and Guidelines which you need to read in full before you enter. That's another way of saying don't blame the organisers if something happens which you didn't expect because you only skimmed them and never sat down and read them properly!

The competition organisers are Parker Harris.

Entry fees and commission

Fees have stayed the same as last year (after a reduction for the 2016 competition following a hike for the 2015 competition)
  • Standard Entry is £15 per work 
  • Student Entry: £8 per work . 
  • You can pay using your Paypal account or via Paypal using your credit card 
  • Commission of 40% + VAT @ 20% charged on:
    • works sold during 
    • or as a result of the exhibition, 
    • or by means of the website. 
    • This means that you will receive a net sum equivalent to 52% of the price you state.
Title and risk will pass on payment by and collection by or delivery to the buyer.
I may be wrong but I don't remember the above sentence last year so I assume there was some sort of dispute which now needs clarification.  Maybe somebody said they would buy, didn't pay the full sum the time and no money was actually collected? Who knows...?

Stage 1: How to enter

  • ALL Entry is digital and online - via the secure https://lps.artopps.co.uk/ website
  • Digital Images must be:
    • 300 dpi
    • file formats: JPG, TIFF, or PNG
    • maximum file size of 500KB - which means a pretty small image in terms of dimensions for length and height
    • files titled using your name and at least part of the title of the artwork
  • Submit your entry online using this online entry form.

BIG TIP: Make sure you get the best possible digital image of your artwork. 

Stage 2: How to submit work

You only need to submit your actual painting or drawing if you've passed the initial selection filter at Stage 1.
  • Typically around 200 artworks make it through to Stage 2 
  • If you pass, this means your art now has a 50% chance of being selected for exhibition.
However the dates in the timeline mean you will only have two weeks to get your work framed and delivery arrangements organised.

 My personal view is I'd like to see more time shaved off the Call for Entries window and time added between the results of Stage 1 and the delivery for Stage 2. Other competitions often allow longer than this one.

BIG TIP: You cannot assume you can book a framer at short notice
What this means is
  • if your work is not framed then you need a framer booked and on standby
  • then cancel the job once you've got the result if you do NOT get selected for Stage 2. Not nice for the framer but there really is no other option (speaks one who got caught out badly on one occasion when every framer was booked up in advance!)
