Remembrance Sunday at Tower Hill (The Merchant Navy Service) |
I was surprised this week to find out that the man who wrote the words now known as the Ode of Remembrabce was actually a man who was better known as an art historian who was a curator at the British Museum specialising in Oriental Art. See Laurence Binyon and the Ode of Remembrance - plus the fantastic painting of red poppies by Arthur Melville

Drawing and sketching
- It was nice to see a friend of mine have her amazing drawings of London featured in Spitalfields Life this week. See Lucinda Rogers' East End. Lucy has a great and unique style and works as a full time illustrator with the sort of client list that I guess many people would like to have. She's also very good at getting access to places not usually open to the casual sketcher - such as when she drew the activities of those ministering to the 9/11 volunteers in St Paul's Chapel after the collapse of the twin towers. I very much appreciate the drawn records she creates of the East End of London where I live.
The passion with which Lucinda approaches her drawing has been motivated by the increased pace of urban development and the urgency of capturing something before it is gone. Many buildings that Lucinda has drawn now only exist in her portfolio.

However being an experienced digital sketcher Walt wanted his stylus back - so has found an app and a stylus which work with a iPad.
- Leadenhall Market - Hanging the Christmas Tree Lights - I was out sketching in the City of London this morning - and caught the chaps who hang the lights on the Christmas Tree.

- Arts organisations MUST meet 2 of 5 criteria (excellence, reach, engagement, diversity & innovation) if they are to attract Arts Council funding in future. Which to me is code for "meet as many of them as you can because funding in the future is going to become VERY competitive". See ACE's new funding system and ten-year strategic framework on Arts Professional (which describes itself as The UK's leading arts management magazine) for more detail.
- The Huffington Post reports that an unusual partnership of Gagosian, Google CEO Eric Schmidt, Dasha Zhukova, And Others To Launch Site Art.sy. I wonder what gave them the idea for the name? ;) Is this a sign of plagiarism to come? You can find out information about art.sy here. Before everybody rushes off to join you might like to take a look at its compete.com profile below - and I've also added this into Online Art Galleries and Stores - Resources for Artists where you can monitor it to see if it takes off. However, I wouldn't recommend getting involved until it looks like it's actually got its act together.

Art Studio
- Richard McKinley (Pastel Pointers) writes about studio organisation in The State of the Studio.
- For those intimidated by Richard's standard of 'mess', I must confess my instant reaction to his photo of his "messy studio" was to search for images of Francis Bacon's studio - now that's what I call MESSY! ;)
- This photo of Lucian Freud with David Hockney sitting for a portrait in his studio also illustrates that although tidier than Bacon he's also not too fussed about where his painting rags go.
- Winsor and Newton got artists to reveal their studios on their facebook page which is http://www.facebook.com/WinsorNewton. The result is The Artist's Studio - What to consider when setting up your working space

Coalition ministers have ejected the "BritArt" image of their Labour predecessors and are now attempting to cast themselves as traditionalists – at least according to the artwork they have selected to adorn their office walls. Cool Britannia is out, and 16th-century battle scenes are in.
