I'm enjoying my research into Van Gogh's approach to drawing. Besides Sjraar Van Heugten's book "Van Gogh - The Master Draughtsman" and other sources mentioned in the Introduction to Van Gogh Project, I've also found some more online sources.
The following provide a very useful perspective on Van Gogh's approach to drawing:
- The Van Gogh letters are available online unabridged and annotated. It's possible to read extracts relating to specific themes - such as:
- art - materials
- art - models
- art - support in which he comments on the sketchbooks and paper he used for drawing
- art - technique - he talks about the drawing instruments he uses
- The CODART website - which is a a worldwide network of museum curators of Dutch and Flemish art has also provided some pointers for learning about Van Gogh's approach to drawing.
- Michael Kimmelman, New York Times correspondent, reviewing the 2005 drawings exhibition
- Eric Gelber, editor of artcritical.com - and his article on the 2005 drawings exhibition
- Van Gogh Letters - unabridged and annotated by Webexhibits. Note credits and copyright
- Sjraar Van Heugten "Van Gogh - The Master Draughtsman" (Thames and Hudson)
- Susan Alyson Stein, Colta Ives, Sjraar Van Heugten amd Marije Vellekoop"Vincent Van Gogh: The Drawings" (Metropolitan Museum of Art)
- Amazon: "Van Gogh - The Master Draughtsman" plus "Vincent Van Gogh: the Drawings"
- The CODART List: "Van Gogh draughtsman: the masterpieces"
- Eric Gelber - critical review of the exhibition of drawings at the Metropolitan Museum 2005
- Michael Kimmelman "The Evolution of a Master who drew on paper" New York Times 14 October 2005
- Eric Gelber, Editor artcritical.com - commenting on the exhibition

Many, many thanks for another treasure trove of VVG links, Katherine. I thought Michael Kimmelman's review/essay was brilliant. I could lose myself in the extract of letters for weeks! When will I ever get time to draw? When do YOU ever get time to draw?!
ReplyDeleteLet me put it this way Robyn - I do these VG posts in stages and when I finally get to the morning I post them it has to be one where I don't have any other claims on my time!
ReplyDeleteI have to say that I'm just getting the most terrific amount out of doing the research and, as ever, it would be a such a shame not to share it!
Many thanks for a terrific and inspiring set of resources. Sargent, VanGogh, ... can't wait to see where you take us next!
