- Date it was created: between 1650 and 1660

This is a translation (via Google) of the description on the Rijksmuseum website - I've tidied up the Google translation!
The quack. On a square is a quack on a platform under a large tree. Hee shows the villagers the dial (or stone) that he has drawn from the man tied to a chair. At the feet of the man is a basket of eggs. On the table are all kinds of bottles and jars and a document with a seal. On the right in the foreground a woman pushes a drunk man in a wheelbarrow. On the far right hangs a violin on a pole on which is perched a monkey with a pipe.The painting was stolen from the Franz Hals Museum where it was on loan in March 2002. It was on loan from the Rijksmuseum. The view at the time was that it was stolen to order. It was subsequently recovered in 2008 and can now be seen on the website of the rejvenated Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
If you look online you'll actually find a lot of artists painted the Kwaksalver - an unauthorised practitioner of medicine and dentistry. Quacks have existed over centuries. In general it's not so much that they're not qualified to practice so much as they're applying useless remedies or aim to deceive. An example of quackery today would be the "miracle diet".

These eyes belong to the self portrait of Albrecht Dürer found at Museum of Prado if I´m not wrong..

How I found it...I tried a few artists such as Raphael and Van Eyck , felt I should know it , then thought that it might be a self portrait , looked them up and found it.

ReplyDeleteThe Who Painted This? #46 is Albrecht Dürer Self Portrait or rather you are showing a portion of the Self Portrait, the eyes! This oil on panel was painted in 1498. Dimensions are 52 cm x 41 cm and it's on display at the Museo del Prado in Madrid. He was 26 years old. What an accomplishment.
I looked for Dürer portraits as the strong features, especially the nose was familiar and could not find it. Then I searched for Dürer's eyes and it came up on google images and on wikipedia. The hair and the way it was painted looked like northern early renaissance.

I started by looking at 16th century paintings of faces but realized that was too late so I checked the 15th century and found Durer's many self portraits. Strangely, paintings from that period all seem to be looking at you from the other way.

Interestingly, Wiki tells me that this painting once belonged to Charles I of England, and was acquired by Felipe of Spain at auction. Poor Charles lost both his head and his Durer.
Pretty sure that's Durer, the self portrait in the Prado - the curls in the hair match up as does what looks like a patch of scleritis in the Left eye, but it seems much greener in your picture than any other image I can find.
ReplyDeleteIt was painted in 1498, is oil on panel and art historians like to comment on how he was showing off his gentlemanly attributes - that is, the pose, the clothes, the background, not the nice bit of chest.
A little sadly, I would probably recognize Durer before one of my cousins, so knew it straight off. Also sadly I have never seen it - although I did go to the Prado several years ago, this particular painting was on loan elsewhere at the time - a big disappointment. But then I saw The Las Meninas and all was forgiven. Really should go back sometime soon . . . .

This wonderfully enigmatic portrait
was instantly recognizable by just it eyes. Saw a reproduction of it as teen-ager, tried to do a self-portrait in the manner of it and failed. Dürer's image and so much of his work has stayed with me since [40 years later].The influence on his recent trip to Italy can be seen and felt.

how you know all this eg how did you do your search : I became aware of Dürers art looking at his etchings in religious books while in elementary school already.Meanwhile I own a couple of books about him and there is a lot of information available there.
I`ve been always fascinated by selfportraits, and I feel lucky to live in Munich where in the "Alte Pinakothek "I had more than once the chance to visit look at the other well known self portrait of his , the frontal one from 1500..

I noticed the wavey hair and began a search for old masters portraits, then renaissance portraits.
The eyes are from Albrecht Durer's 'Self Portrait at 26', painted in 1498 in oil on wood panel, now living at the Museo Del Prado in Madrid.
ReplyDeleteInitially I thought it was a dutch painter because of the highlights in the pupils which looked like window reflections, but the curls, the corner his cap top right, and the hooked top of the nose made me rethink to durer. So I searched his paintings on google and there he was.

ReplyDeleteWhen I was a teenager I began my love affair with art, and spent many hours studying and copying the work of Albrecht Durer. So when I saw those eyes I knew it was "Self Portrait at 26" by Albrecht Durer, painted in oil on wood panel and hanging in the Museo del Prado.
The tools I used were memory, with a bit of google and the website of the Prado for verification

How do I know all this: I'm kicking myself. I thought it was a Dürer self-portrait because of the nose and the style. It wasn't the painting I was thinking of so I gave up. Sunday evening I decided to have another look. I searched for "renaissance portrait" in Google images and there it is. The information comes from the Prado web site.

This is painted by the german artist Albrecht Durer ( sorry could not get the two dots over "u"). It has no title but it is know as a self-portrait, there is also a written inscription by the artist.It was painted in 1498 and the technoque is oil on panel. It is now in the Prado museum, Madrid, Spain
