Selected Artists
83 paintings by 79 artists have been selected from an entry of about 800 paintings.
52 artists surnames come from the first half of the alphabet - making artists with a surname starting A-M 66% of the the total selected. Which is very odd - and worth querying! I'll be repeating this exercise with future posts about selected artists.
If the artist has a website the link is included in the name. I also include sundry comments about artists - and their websites. I see an awful lot of websites and some of the obvious comments begin to jump out at you. You can tell the ones where I found information about the artist easily. Could I easily create a one sentence summary of you as an artist from the information you provide on your website?
I found it amazing just how many artists do NOT appear to paint regularly in watercolour - much more so than usual.

- Elise Allan - a Scottish artist. Her website states she is also exhibiting this year in the 2013 Annual Exhibitions of the The Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour, Society Of Scottish Artists and the Paisley Art Institute
- Steven Allan Griffiths - a Welsh artist; his home page says "your preconceptions about watercolour painting could change"
- Roger Allen - a professional artist, based in Derbyshire and working a professional artist working in the mediums of oil and watercolour. He paints the Peak District.
- Sarah Armstrong-Jones - This is her gallery's webpage for her paintings. A.K.A Lady Sarah Chatto, niece of the Queen.

- Akash Bhatt - a consistent exhibitor with the Sunday Times Watercolour Exhibition over the years. His website is good but hasn't been updated for some time.
- Alexandra Blum - a fascinating website with images exploring how to represent urban space in space and through different media
- Francis Bowyer PPRWS, NEAC - a Member and Past President of the Royal Watercolour Society and is a Member of the New English Art Club.

- Leo Davey - an illustrator with paintings full of highly complex shapes and colours which he makes wonderfully accessible
- Catharine Davison - an artist who grew up next to the Mourne Mountains and who now lives and works in Ediburgh. She seems to like mountains! This is what I wrote in my review of last year's exhibition
Being a big fan of "views" paintings and the use of pen and ink I absolutely loved the two paintings by Catharine Davison whose work I've never seen before. I'm going to be taking a long slow wander around her website.
- Amy Dennis - another artist who likes painting views of Edinburgh; this is a gallery webpage about her paintings

- Sara Dudman and Debbie Locke - two artists collaborating. Debbie Locke was the Artist in Residence for Drawn Exhibition, Royal West of England Academy this year.

- Mark Elsmore RBSA - won last year's competition. He's also a member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and the Wirral Society of Arts
- Luke Elwes - a contemporary watercolour painter. This is his blog on Squarespace. He also writes about contemporary art for journals including Modern Painters, Royal Academy Magazine and Galleries Magazine.

- Gethin Evans - is an art tutor who is leading the new The New Fine ArtFoundation Course being run by the Prince's Drawing School

- Philip Hood - has one of those weird websites with tiny text which jumps and flashes and which, to be perfectly honest, I find very tiresome. I think it said he'd been previously selected for the Sunday Times Watercolour Exhibition
- Andrew Horrod - by way of contrast Andrew has the sort of website which is unpretentious, loads fast, shows paintings quickly and gives up relevant information without a search! He's a full time artist based at Wimbledon Art Studios who last exhibited in this competition in 1995.

- Wendy Jacob - Wendy is Senior Vice President of the Royal Watercolour Society. She works in gouache. I think of Wendy as the fences lady because whenever I see paintings of hers they always seem to involve fences
- Martin Jacobs - the first website I've seen in a long time without a bio.
- Michael Johnson - I'm guessing this is the artist who works in egg tempera
- James Judge - The only James Judge I can find seems to paint consistently in oil.

- Andrea Kelland - a Welsh artist, living in Pembrokeshire who paints where the land meets the sea in oil and watercolour
- Ian Kesterton - no website however this is an article about Ian Kesterton
- Yolka Klos
- Charlotte Knox - has a blog Charlotte Knox and an excellent, accessible website with 'to the point' text. She specialises in watercolor and tempera paintings; her subject matter are foods, plants, and landscapes with an emphasis on strong colours and striking, simple designs. She won the Winsor & Newton First Prize in the RWS Contemporary Watercolour Competition for her painting Locksmith, 2nd Avenue, New York and the June edition of Artists & Illustrators has an article about her techniques.

- Thomas Lamb - this is his first year of being selected for the exhibition. I hate websites that assume you have the time to sit through a (very slow) slideshow. In my view it's a recipe for having your work ignored.
- Sharon Leahy-Clark - selected this year for the Jerwood Drawing Prize. the Derwent art Prize as well as for this exhibition

- Mei-Yim Low - a simple website which loads fast but doesn't tell me anything about the artist's bio.

- Robert Macdonald - one of the oddest biographies I've read in a long time - nice story though! No details re media or size of paintings.
- Gordon McDowall - winner of the Sunday Times 2010 Cityscape Prize with a stunning watercolour of Toledo
- Angus McEwan RSW RWS - a lecturer in Art & Design at Dundee College and a member of the "Art of the Real" group exhibiting watercolour paintings around the world
- Christine McKechnie - I was very sad to see a website spoilt by poor quality images. (they need to be 72 dpi)
- Bridget Moore - Bridget is a member artist of the Mall Galleries - being a member of both the New English Art Club and the Royal Society of British Artists
- Chris Myers RI RBA - Watercolour is Chris's primary medium. He was the subject of a 'Masterclass' feature in the current April edition of 'The Artist' magazine. Chris is also last year's winner of the Smith & Williamson Cityscape prize. (see my blogpost about prizewinners)

- Matthew Phinn - is a permanent member of the Japanese National Watercolour Society. His work has been selected twice for the Sunday Times Watercolour Exhibition
- David Poxon RI - features in an 8 page article "Practice Patience to Gain Control" in issue 92 Aug/Sept 2013 International Artist magazine. This year David was awarded the Winsor & Newton major prize for best group of paintings at the Annual Exhibition of the Royal Insititute of Painters in Watercolour.

- Peter Quinn RWS - is a member of the Royal Watercolour Society. He's also Chair of the Bewick Society. His blog has lovely big images of his work.

- Tim Rose - is an architectural artist and specialises in the portrayal of buildings, gardens and cityscapes.

The 2013 judging panel comprises Julia Farrer,artist; Danny Markey, artist;
Dr Susan Owens, Curator of Painting, Victoria & Albert Museum; Desmond Shawe-Taylor CVO, Surveyor of the Queen’s Pictures; and Hugh Pearman, critic & writer, The Sunday Times.
After the exhibition at the Mall Galleries in September, this exhibition will move to Surrey where you can see it at the Guildford House Gallery in Guildford between 7 December 2013 and 4 January 2014.

Elise Allan and Christine Mckechnie. Can see you point about Christine's images as they seem a little out of focus. I have no idea about pixel sizes for images. However, the one thing I hate (I am guilty of this but am a hobbyist), no sizes of the work and images that don't click to a larger image outside the page, so I can get a better look at the work. Elise Allan is guilty of both.
Looking at the websites you listed for the Threadneedle comp, made me look at my neglected blog. I am going to do some serious editing and look yours plus other website for advice.
