Who Painted This #17 - The Answer
Who painted this? #17
View of Greenock by Robert Salmon

Thyssen-Bornemisza collection
Here's a short extract of what is written about this painting in the Thyssen-Bornemisza collection on the Museum's website (it's a translation)
Before moving to America, Salmon had lived in the Scottish port of Greenock, where he painted this landscape in 1816. This seaport, located east of Glasgow on the River Clyde, was a very beautiful area with many attractions for tourists and artists. In the foreground, before the panoramic landscape, genre is a bucolic scene showing a group of Washerwomen performing daily chores Their amid a clearing in the path. The backdrop is the town of Greenock, miniaturist rendered in detail, with its smoking chimneys and several boats moored at the harbor or sailing across the estuary with sails unfurled
    The correct answers

The one and only person to provide the correct answer was Alyson Chump (The Chronicle of Wasted Time).

Lots of wails and gnashing of teeth though! :)

What do we know about the artist Robert Salmon?
    • He was a maritime artist - and you can see some of his paintings on Wikimedia Commons
    • he painted nearly 1,000 paintings and is considered by some to be one of the most important maritime painters in art history
    • Born 1778 in Whitehaven in Cumbria
    • In the UK he painted mainly in Greenock, Liverpool and other ports.
    • He emigrated to the USA in 1828 and became a prosperous Boston seascape painter.  he stayed until 1842 when he left and travelled to Italy.  It's unclear when he died.
    • Some websites highlight him as being influential in the development of marine art in the USA.  He is characterised by some as the father of American Luminism - ie depicting calm, reflective water and a soft, hazy sky.  While other websites about Luminism say nothing about him.
He is widely considered the father of American Luminism with a style of painting that was to influence the likes of Fitz H. Lane, William Bradford and many other young New England artists of the nineteenth century.Artnet

    1. I think it is Henri Fantin-Latour, 1870's?, not sure where it lives, but I've seen one very similar in Boston at MFA.

    2. I could not get this one, #17.
Seeing the answer I know I was not that close.

It makes sense now though, with a name like Salmon he should be a maritime artist!

    4. This one was definitely easier than #17. I initially thought they were peonies so I searched for still life paintings of peonies (there were lots) I saw a painting which had a similar style it was by Henri Fantin Latour but I didn't pursue the link as I thought it wasn't right. I then did a search for still life painters on Wikipedia and I saw his name again.

    5. I knew it was by Henri Fantin-Latour because my grandmother was a keen grower of roses and lover of rose paintings, his in particular and some of the first flower paintings I ever saw were by him. It was painted in 1875, oil on canvas. It took me awhile to work out that it belongs in a private collection and that it is promised as a gift to the Auckland Art Gallery in New Zealand!

    6. Hi Katherine,

      Thank you. This was easier.

Title of the artwork: Vase of roses

Name of the artist who created this artwork: Henri Fantin-Latour

      Date it was created: 1875

      Media used: Oil on canvas

Where it lives now: Private collection: Julian and Josie Robertson, New York, NY

How do I know this: Luck. I searched for “Manet White Roses” in Google images. One of the results was White Roses by Henri Fantin-Latour which led via wikipiedia to this information. I found a reference to the picture in a review of an exhibition at the Auckland Art Gallery. http://christchurchartgallery.org.nz/blog/bunker-notes/2011/09/16/mondrians-klutziness/

      Cheers,

      Mark

    9. Hi Katherine!
      1. Title for #18 is: Vase des roses or Vase of Peonies
      2. Artist: Henri Fantin-Latour
      3. Created: 1875
      4. Medium: oil
      5. Where it is: Well, Wiki says it is in the private collection of Julian and Josie Robertson but they may have given it to the Aukland Gallery in New Zealand.
      6. I had a hunch it was Fantin-Latour, so I googled him and found similar flower paintings...eventually ran upon the painting. Very confusing as it has two titles.
This was fun and yes, much easier than several of the last ones. :o)

      FURTHER INFO :-
Ignace Henri Jean Fantin-Latour (January 14, 1836 - August 25, 1904) was a French painter and lithographer. Born Henri Jean Theodore Fantin-Latour in Grenoble, Rhone-Alpes, France, he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He is best known for his flower paintings and group portraits of his friends Parisian artists and writers. His work strongly influenced the symbolist movement of the late 19th Century.[citation needed]

Whistler brought attention to Fantin in England. In addition to his paintings, Fantin-Latour created ingenious lithographs demonstrating the music of some of the great classical composers. In 1876, Henri Fantin-Latour married a fellow painter, Victoria Dubourg, after which he spent his summers on the country estate of his wife's family at Bure, Orne in Basse-Normandie, where he died of lyme disease. He was interred in the Cimetiere du Montparnasse, Paris, France. Today, his paintings can sell for as much as US$2.5 million each. (From Wikipedia)

    18. I guess I'm late to the party but too much going on here to get on to this "Who Painted This? #18" mystery when it was posted. But all that being said, here is my answer.....It is a painting called "Vase of Peonies" by Henri Fontin Latour. It was painted in 1875 and is oil on canvas and is in a private collection. I fooled around with the phrase of "Still life roses in vase" in Google and got nothing but a lot of rose paintings and not this one. I changed the flower to "Peony" and again nothing but when I added "Impressionist painting of white roses" the image came up right away. I followed the image to WikiPaintings and found the rest of the info.
