Who painted these 10 Popes?

Last week was a bit more of a challenge - and a lot of you still got the correct answer (see Who Painted This #15 - The Answer below).

However one person was so miffed by the challenge that they decided to award last week's post a "one star" because they hated it!  I think they must have been a tad frustrated.......

You can find out the names of all the people who got the correct answer at the end.

Call me perverse if you like but I guess I'll be frustrating a few more people this week.  That's because this week - in honour of a momentous event - I have a challenge which should keep all "who painted this?" fans occupied for most of the week!

The winner will be the person who comes up with the MOST correct answers - so do not despair if you can't get them all!

"Who painted this? #16" - Who painted these 10 Popes?

In honour of a very courageous decision - one which had me spouting "Popes can't resign!" when I found out.  I reflected on it and decided he is probably a very wise man.

Clue:  No artist is repeated but one Pope is repeated.  There's the odd clue lying around....

Who Painted This Pope? #1
PLEASE make sure you read the rules before posting a comment - and ONLY POST ON THIS BLOG what you think is the answer.

Click this link to read THE RULES for participating in this challenge (this saves having to copy them out for each post!).

In short:
  • use your brains not software to find the answer
  • search using words only on a database of images
  • leave your answer as a comment on this blog  (This week you can post correct answers one by one if you like.  However you must have ONE comment which summarises ALL the correct answers you have supplied BEFORE next Friday)
  • correct and partially correct answers will not be published until the next post - which provides the answer
  • if wrong it will be published
  • do not leave the answer on Facebook!
  • the winner - who gets a mention and a link on/from this blog - is the first person to give me a completely correct answer for ALL the things I want to know
These are the things I want to know - for EACH of the 10 paintings of 10 Popes(!)

  • Title of the artwork
  • Name of the Pope:
  • Name of the artist who created this artwork

  1. Your words on the frustrated poster made me laugh. I only quit attempting these because I never am first to give you correct answer so don't take the time any longer. Love these paintings you shared in this post!

    1. Well the interesting thing about making it 10 pics is that I doubt if anybody will get them all - and so it becomes a question of what is the maximum number that one person can get correct

I'm absolutely certain some will get some correct.

Have a go - you may surprise yourself, especially if you find "the shortcut"?

  2. here's hoping I'm not the first -
1 - St Francis preaching a sermon to Pope Honorius 3, painted by Giotto in 1297-99, its a fresco in San Francesco upper church in Assissi. Knew it was Giotto so looked up Giotto Pope and there it was!
2- Dream of Pope Sergius painted by Roger van Weyden in the late 1430's. It is oil on panel and is in the J Paul Getty Museum, currently on view at Los Angeles.
3- St.Lawrence recieving the treasures of the church from Pope Sixtus 2 painted by Fra Angelico. Another fresco, painted between 1447 and 1451. It is in the Niccoline Chapel, part of the Vatican. The 2nd and 3rd I found from the wikipaintigs page - which I found during my search for the Giotto. An interesting place this, taht I hadn't found before.
4- Portrait of Paul the third, by Titian in 1543. Oil on canvas and in the national museum of Capodimonte in Naples. Knew this straight away as Titian. I like Titian.
5- a trick, this one - instantly identifiable from Raphael's Pope Leo X and two cardinals, but either a study or a copy. Finally tracked it down as being Pope Leo X by Angelo Bronzino painted between 1555 and 1565 (which makes it a copy of the Raphael) in oils on tin(!) and currently in the Uffizi, Florence.
6- Catherine of Siena escorting Pope Gregory 11th at Rome on 17th January 1377 by Giorgio Vasari. Another Fresco, also found via wikipaintings site. Painted in 1571-1574 and in the Sala Regia in the Apostolic Palace in Rome.
7- The incomparable Portrait of Innocent X by Velazquez. It is the Galleria Doria Pamphilj in Rome, but there is a smaller version according to wikipedia in the Metropolitan in NY. It was painted between 1649 and 1651 and is oils on canvas.
8-Portrait of Pope Pius the 5th by El Greco, painted between 1600 and 1610, oils on canvas and in a private collection - which may be why I didn't recognize it and had to resort to looking for pope paintings in google images.
9- Pope Pius the 7th by Jacques-Louis David, painted in 1805. Oil on wood and in the Louvre, Paris. Saw it last week.
10- Pope Leo X after Raphael by Fernando Botero, painted in 1964. Afraid I can't seem to find out where it is - which means it is most likely in a private collection.

(haven't sepearted out the pope names as they are all in the titles!)

  7. Boy, this was difficult just by the shear volume.
    So here it goes:

#1."Legend of St. Francis Preaching before Pope Honorius III" by Giotto di Bonde. Painted 1297-1299, fresco located San Francesco, Upper Church, Assisi, Italy.

#2."The Dream of Pope Sergius" by Rogier van der Weyden in late 1430's. Oil on panel and is located in the Getty Museum, Calif, USA

#3. "St. Lawrence Receiving the Treasure of the Church from Pope Sixtus". Painted by Fra Angelico, c.1450's as a fresco in the Chapel of Nicholas V, Vatican Palace.

#4."Pope Paul III" by Titan, 1443, oil on canvas located in the Museo Nazionale di Capondimonte, Naples, Italy.

#5."Pope Leo X" by Bronzino. Painted 1555-1565. Oil on tin. Located Uffizi Gallery.

#6."Pope Gregory XI Returns the Papal Seat from Avignon to Rome" painted by Giorgio Vasari during his lifetime 1511-1574 as no date recorded. Fresco in the Palace of the Vatacan.

#7."Portrait of Innocent X" by Diego Velazquez in 1650. Oil on canvas. Located at Doria Pamphili Gallery.

#8. "Pope Pius V" by El Greco in 1605. Oil on canvas. Private collection.

#9. "Pope Pius VII" painted by Jacques-Louis David in 1805. Oil on wood. Located in the Louve, Paris.

#10 ""Portrait of Pope Leo X (after Raphael)" painted by Fernando Botero in 1964. Oil on canvas and is in a private collection.

My search on Google started with the search phrase of "Portrait paintings of Popes" Found most with that search but the hardest was #3 so I added the word "Saint" to the search phrase because of the halos observed.

  10. C'mon Katherine, no more of these multi ones... sheesh!

    I can't believe I found them all!
I am definitely too pooped to pope now!
('too pooped' or 'pooped out' is an American expression for tired, no need to offend anyone)

Googling 'pope paintings' and 'pope portrait paintings' helped with most...
then 'religious pope paintings' and 'medieval pope paintings' and 'renaissance pope paintings'
also 'master paintings frescos of popes'
Finally just googling 'pope' or 'popes'
Other times I found the artwork but not ALL the info, I would then have to google the artist or the Pope's name.
