Call for entries - 2009 RWS/Sunday Times Watercolour Competition

The 2009 London submission dates for the prestigious and popular annual RWS/Sunday Times Watercolour Competition have been announced
The Sunday Times Watercolour Competition began in 1987 and was co-sponsored by Singer and Friedlander. Their chairman at the time, Tony Solomons, loved watercolours and built up a fine collection of the 19th and 20th century watercolours for the bank during their 20 year association with the competition. The Royal Watercolour Society is delighted to continue it’s co-sponsorship of this prestigious competition for the second year running.
This is one of the very few major prizes which celebrates watercolour - a medium which is often undervalued in the commercial contemporary art world.

The Selectors -
The judges will be looking for work that makes the most imaginative or otherwise impressive use of a water based medium. The 2009 judges are:
Prizes - Prize money totals £22,500 as follows:
  • 1st Prize £12,000
  • 2nd Prize £7,000
  • Young Artist £1,500
  • Smith & Williamson Cityscape Prize £1,500
  • Penguin Classics Prize for Cover Art £500
What can be submitted?
  • paintings in a water based medium on a paper based support
  • paintings by all artists born or resident in the UK (no age limit)
  • original and recent paintings - carried out in the last three years and not previously exhibited
  • work which is the sole and original work of the entrant - it must be an original composition and the artist must own the copyright
  • paintings including frames which do not exceed 122 x 122cm
  • up to 4 works
What is not allowed?
  • works on canvas
  • non-reflective glass, metal, plastic or clip frames
  • projections from the back of the work

What is the deadline for entries? Sunday 28 or Monday 29 June 2009 between 10am and 5pm in London. Deadlines for regional pick-up are earlier.

How should work be submitted? Fully completed entry forms plus entry fees of £15 per work plus (unwrapped) works of art should be submitted to
  • LONDON: St Mary Abbots Centre, Vicarage Gate, London W8 4HN on Sunday 28 or Monday 29 June 2009 between 10am and 5pm,
  • OR to the regional handing-in centres identified in the RWS leaflet (Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Cornwall, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Kendal, Manchester, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Norwich, Southampton and Yorkshire)
How many will be accepted and shown? Approximately 100 works will be exhibited at Bankside Gallery from 9th - 20th September 2009.
